Fort Zumwalt South’s basketball legacy began at South Middle School.
The inaugural varisity team played a season and a half at the middle school while its gymnasium was being completed. The first season had no upperclassman.
Finally, its gym and the one that stands today opened in early 1989.
In the entryway to the gym is the framed jersey of Joshua McCoy, a standout player at Zumwalt South from 2004-2008.
The gym is named after Brad Hill, an English teacher and the first head basketball and tennis coach at Zumwalt South who died in his sleep in 1997. The Fort Zumwalt, now North, graduate was 41 and left behind two daughters, 8 and 12 years old.
He was the first of three family members to be named a St. Louis Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete, according to a Post-Dispatch obituary.
